Letter of Appreciation to Dr. N.V.K.Chakravarty

The trustees of the Foundation for Education and Research in Climate Change (FERCC) thank Dr. N.V.K.Chakravarty for his commitment to support FERCC with monthly donation till the year 2030 to start with. We are indebted to him for his volunteer disclosure in an event held in Visakhapatnam after listening to a presentation on the activities of FERCC. This support will definitely enlarge some of its activities in relation to climate change. Dr.Chakravarty is known s an eminent Agricultural Meteorology Scientist who served the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute for nearly four decades during 1970-2009 and retired as Principal Scientist and Head of the Agricultural Physics Division. In addition to his pioneering research and contribution in Agricultural Meteorology, this act of his kindness for FERCC shows that at heart Dr. Chakravarty is a very good human being.  Philanthropy is his religion. He knows that there is more pleasure in ‘giving’ than ‘getting’. We pray the Almighty to bless him with long life and success so that he will continue to serve the in society for the good of the people.

Dr. N.V.K.Chakravarty is an eminent Agricultural Meteorology Scientist served the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute for nearly four decades during 1970-2009 and retired as Principal Scientist and Head of the Agricultural Physics Division. He did pioneering research and contributed much in the field of Agricultural Meteorology in India, especially, in quantifying Crop-Weather-Pest-Dynamics using Growing Degree Days, with a special reference to crop phonological events through intense field experiments.  He worked on various crops viz., wheat, mungbean, barley, rice, chickpea and mustard. He also worked on Biomass and Yield estimations/predictions using remote sensing techniques in Rice, Chickpea, Mustard and Wheat crops and Dynamic Crop Simulation modeling in Rice crop. His contribution on the development of ?Mustard Aphid Forewarning model using Growing Degree Days? was well acclaimed and extensively adopted by IMD and several State Agricultural Universities.  He brought forth many innovations including creation of a dedicated web page (IARI) for the Weather Based Agro-advisories, which was first of its kind in India. He mentored several Ph.D. and M.Sc. students, published a book, 3 book-chapters and about 100 research publications in peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Chakravarty is a spiritualist, practices yoga and is a philanthropist.
