Indian Meteorological Society
The Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) is a non-profit scientific organization which was established in 1957. It promotes the advancement and dissemination of knowledge, especially in the field of meteorology and related sciences. It has about 4000 Life Members from 100 or more research institutes, universities, user agencies, and private sectors. Further, there are several student members who are primarily pursuing their PhD programmes in several Higher Educational Institutions. The objectives of IMS include advancement of weather and climate science and dissemination of their knowledge both among the researchers and public. Further, emphasis has also been given on climate services related to applied fields such as agriculture, water availability, human health, transport etc. In order to achieve the above objectives, various special lectures, brain storming workshops, discussion meetings and symposia are organized by IMS from time to time. IMS also publishes popular books, periodicals, journal, brochures etc as and when required. Annual symposium of IMS named TROPMET/INTROMET is its flagship programme which is organized at different local chapters of IMS. About 300 senior scientists and early career scientists get chance to participate in this annual event and interact with each other and exchange scientific ideas. IMS has instituted several awards to honor its senior scientists and young scientists as well. Some of the local chapters of IMS are vibrant with several awareness programmes and training programmes for teachers as well as for students.
Profs. D.V.Bhaskar Rao and Sushil Kumar Dash are life members and Fellows of IMS for the last several years and have been actively involved in IMS by taking responsibilities in many of its activities. Prof. Sushil Dash was elected as President of IMS for a period of two years during 2018-2020 and served as the Chief Editor of IMS journal VayuMandal for about seven years. Prof.Bhaskar Rao is currently the Chief Editor of VayuMandal. IFMS has been sponsoring six awards for the best poster presentations under six different themes by the Research Scholars from different institutions participating in the TROPMET/INTROMET. These awards are named ‘IMS-FERRCC’ Awards.
