Online Teachers’ Training on Climate Education           Jointly Organized by FERCC and IMS, Nagpur Chapter

          Courses III & IV on 22^nd  February 2026

The Foundation for Education and Research in Climate Change, (FERCC), New Delhi, and the Indian Meteorological Society, Nagpur Chapter (IMSN) jointly organised an online program on the third and fourth courses of the Teachers Training on Climate Education (TTCE). The program consists of 12 courses in total. Courses I&II were delivered earlier on 25^th January and 8^th February respectively. Course Director Prof. D.V. Bhaskar Rao, Honorary professor, Andhra University & General Secretary FERCC chaired the session in the presence of Prof. Sushil Kumar Dash, Course Director and former HoD, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, IIT, Delhi & President FERCC. Shri. R. Balasubramanian, Scientist F & Dy. Director General of Meteorology, RMC, Nagpur, could not attend the meeting due to his busy schedule. Dr. Praveen Kumar, Scientist C and Joint Secretary IMSN, gave the welcome address. Ms. Vijayta Sangwan, Scientific Assistant, IMD introduced the speakers and Dr. Ravindra Akre, Coordinator of TTCE and Secretary, IMSN conducted the program and proposed a vote of thanks. The members of FERCC and IMS Nagpur contributed a lot to the success of the program.    

Dr. Praveen Kumar welcomed all the dignitaries, resource persons, and participating teachers. He summarised the objectives of the program and the past lectures held so far. He also mentioned about the importance of today’s talk in the context of the extreme weather events happening.

Dr. Barnali Paul presented her talk on the Details of Regional Weather and Climate.’ She highlighted the Koppen’s Climatic Classification, different climate zones in India including Nagpur with examples, and environmental and human health impacts of weather events on daily life of the people.  She discussed extreme events such as cloudbursts, cyclone, floods of Uttarakhand, and the number of deaths caused by the natural disaster.                          

Dr. Dinesh Rase gave his presentation on ‘Extreme Weather Events.’ He explained these events in the context of their increase in frequency and intensity due to the climate change. He discussed the importance of early warning based on the present day forecasts of extreme events issued by the IMD. He explained how such predictions have become helpful in minimising loss caused by natural disasters.

At the end of the session, there was lovely interaction between the experts and participants.  Ms. Suja Josheph shared her personal experience of the extreme events, and the importance of general awareness of such events by the public. Dr. Sujata Damke also actively took part in the discussions.  Some participants asked how to get data for research purposes.
