Online Teachers’ Training on Climate Education Jointly Organized by FERCC and IMS, Nagpur Chapter

The Foundation for Education and Research in Climate Change (FERCC) and the Indian Meteorological Society, Nagpur Chapter (IMSN) jointly organised the fifth and sixth courses on ‘Teachers Training on Climate Education (TTCE) in the online mode. Prof. Sushil Kumar Dash, former HoD, Centre of Atmospheric Sciences, IIT, Delhi & President FERCC, delivered the welcome address. Prof. D.V. Bhaskar Rao Andhra University and General Secretary FERCC; Shri. R. Balasubramanian, Scientist F & Dy. Director General of Meteorology, RMC, Nagpur, joined the event. Guest of Honour, Prof. Rajshree Kotharkar, Dept. of Architecture and Planning, VNIT, Nagpur, could not present at the meeting due to personal problems. Mrs. Reena Surpam, Meteorologist, & Ms. Vijata Sangwan, Scientific Assistant, IMD, introduced the speakers and Dr. Ravindra Akre, Course Coordinator and Secretary, IMSN conducted the program and Ms. Sapana Meena proposed a vote of thanks. The members of FERCC and IMS Nagpur contributed a lot for the success of the program.
Prof. Sushil Kumar Dash welcomed all dignitaries, resource persons, and participating teachers. He summarized the overall objectives of TTCE, and he extended his greetings on the occasion of the Women’s Day.
Dr. Debishree Khan, Senior Scientist, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur gave her presentation on the topic ‘Physics and Chemistry of Global Warming’. She briefly explained the electromagnetic spectrum highlighting visible and infra radiations, radiations laws, short and long waves, earth’s energy budget and greenhouse effect. She highlighted many aspects of the current issues of climate change like increasing trends in temperature, variations in rainfall and several other extreme weather events around the globe and particularly in India.
Dr. Latha Sridhar, Scientist D, Meteorological Centre, Bangalore, IMD dwelled on the topic ‘Fundamentals of Numerical Weather Prediction.’ She gave a brief history of weather forecasting leading to the numerical models and weather predictions using those models. She further explained the underlining physical equations which govern the atmospheric dynamics and physics.
After the end of the two lectures, interactions were held between the participating teachers and experts present. Prof. Sujata Damke, Dr. Shantidas Lunge, and others actively participated in the discussion.
The program ended with the announcement of the seventh and eighth lectures on the 22nd of March 2026.
