Climate Change and Related Disasters:  Requirement of Educational and Training Programmes

President of ‘FERCC’ Dr. Sushil Kumar Dash was invited by Dr. Tarun Kumar Pradhan the Principal of Khariar (Autonomous) College, Khariar, Nuapada, Odisha to address the PG & UG students of the college on the current issues of climate change on 11th November 2022. The exact topic of the presentation was ‘Climate Change and Related Disasters:  Requirement of Educational and Training Programmes’. About 150 students of the college attended the talk. To start with, the Physics behind the global warming were explained in simple words. Subsequently, the progress made in the development of mathematical models for weather forecasts and climate prediction was narrated briefly. Thereafter, the disasters such as the extreme temperature and rainfall, intense cyclones etc. as a consequence of climate changes were mentioned and global efforts in the direction of early warnings to reduce the loss of life and property was discussed. Finally, the necessity of capacity development through education and training for all the sections of the society was narrated focusing on the teachers and students. At the end of the presentation there was questions-answer session where very interesting issues came up from the students. There was a lively discussion on the current state of weather data monitoring in India and use of collected data in forecasting of temperature, rainfall, wind strength and direction etc. The President of Khariar College Governing Body Mr. Biswajit Padhi finally expressed that there should be more discussions of this type in future for the benefit of the students.
